“Dame” Autumn / Winter 2020 collection is inspired by the Malaysian Peranakan culture. Their culture is prominent in my hometown of Penang, Malaysia, and their traditional clothing has inspired many people especially my late grandmother, who has worn their traditional clothing since her younger days even though she was not of Peranakan descent. 

The collection is also inspired by the elegance of '50s fashion especially one of the most well-known designers, Christian Dior. Both the '50s and Peranakan style both have something in common which is that they embrace elegance as a sense of style in their daily life. 

 

The objective for my collection is to create a timeless collection that combines the elegance of the Peranakan culture and 50’s fashion with an East-meets-West approach to help in the efforts to promote the unique culture which is slowly being forgotten through my embroidery designs that are inspired by the motifs on Peranakan clothing.

The collection designs for a mature woman over 30 years young with a sense of style that embraces her age and loves herself. She is someone who does not follow the current trends as she believes the classics never go out of style.

 

This capsule collection pays homage to the Peranakan Culture by utilizing Embroidery in the designs for the collection which are inspired by the motifs used by the Peranakan’s such as the Phoenix and floral patterns of the "Baju Kebayas".
